Despite being one of the poorest nations on earth, Malawi is known for the generosity and kindness of its people. 1 in 5 children in Malawi are classified as "vulnerable" due to the loss of one or both parents. Villages throughout the country are dealing with a profound need for help caring for these children. Community-based organizations and NGOs are working across the nation to meet these needs.
Rumphi Orphan Center
In July of 2023 Rumphi Orphan Center opened with 20 children, ages 3-14 who had been selected by traditional leaders, teachers, and village members. Since then they have had many demands including children personally coming to the center hungry, crying, and asking to stay.They are now serving over 50 children, and they expect to grow to over 100 soon.
Little ones need special care
In February 2025, the center’s leaders requested assistance in constructing an addition to accommodate the growing number of young children—from newborns to five-year-olds—who have been arriving. The plans and land for the addition are already in place; now they need help building and furnishing it. A team of volunteers from Albuquerque, NM, will travel to Malawi in June to help bring this project to fruition.
